Lighting Hallways and Stairs — What Works and What Code Requires

Hallways and stairs are circulation, not destination, and they get lit that way: a single ceiling fixture at each end and nothing in between. The result is a corridor with two bright spots and a dark middle, and a staircase where the treads are in shadow. This guide covers the spacing and heights that make these spaces work, the code requirements that apply to stairs, and the fixture choices that keep a hallway from looking like a hotel corridor.

Hallway Sconce Spacing

Space sconces 6–8 feet apart along the wall, measured center to center. In a long hallway with tall ceilings, 8–10 feet is acceptable and avoids the institutional look of a fixture every few steps. Closer than 6 feet, the wall becomes a row of lights rather than a lit wall.

Start the run so the fixtures land where they are useful: opposite a doorway, at a turn, at the top of a stair. Do not simply divide the hall into equal segments and hope the fixtures miss the door casings — lay out the doors first, then place the sconces in the wall space between them, at least 6 inches clear of any trim.

On a narrow hall — under 42 inches — put the sconces on one side only. Sconces on both walls in a narrow corridor crowd the space and produce cross-glare.

Hallway Mounting Height

Mount at 60–66 inches from the finished floor to the center of the junction box. Go to the high end with 9-foot ceilings and above. The light should land on the ceiling and floor and wash the wall, not hit the eye of someone walking past; up/down sconces and shaded downlights do this well, exposed-bulb fixtures do not.

There is a code rule here. Any wall-mounted fixture in a corridor with its lowest point below 80 inches from the floor may project no more than 4 inches from the wall. Most compact cylinder and cone sconces clear this. Confirm it on the spec sheet before specifying anything with an arm.

Ceiling Fixtures in Hallways

Where the hallway is too narrow or too full of doors for sconces, flush-mount ceiling fixtures are the alternative. Space them 8–10 feet apart, and choose fixtures with a shade or diffuser so the source is not visible from below. A row of flush mounts down a hall reads as a line, so keep them exactly on center; a fixture that is off the centerline by 2 inches is visible from the end of the hall.

Adjustable spotlights on a monopoint canopy are a third option, and the best one if the hallway has art. One fixture can wash a wall of frames; two, aimed in opposite directions, light both walls from a single ceiling box.

Staircase Lighting

Stairs are the one place in a house where lighting is a safety requirement, not a design preference. The residential code requires an artificial light source that illuminates every tread and landing to at least 1 foot-candle, and a switch at both the top and the bottom of any stair with six or more risers. A single ceiling fixture at the top of the stair usually fails the first rule — it lights the upper treads and leaves the lower ones in shadow.

Sconces along a stair mount at 60–66 inches above the tread directly below the fixture — not above the floor at the bottom of the stair. Each fixture is measured from its own tread, so the sconces step up the wall with the stair. Space them 6–8 feet apart along the run, and put one at each landing. The same 4-inch projection rule from hallways applies wherever the fixture is below 80 inches above the tread.

Step lights recessed into the wall or riser are a supplement, not a replacement. Place them 6–12 inches above the tread every three or four steps. They are useful for night-time circulation but do not by themselves meet the illumination requirement.

Light Quality

Specify 2700K–3000K throughout, and hold the same color temperature from the hallway into the rooms it connects. A CRI of 90 or higher matters on stairs more than people expect: low-CRI light flattens the contrast between tread and riser, which is precisely what you do not want. Put hallway lighting on a dimmer and, where it exists, on a separate circuit from the stair, so the hall can go low at night while the stair stays safe.

Common Mistakes

One fixture per hall. Two ceiling fixtures in a 30-foot hallway leave a dark middle. Space fixtures 6–10 feet apart, whatever the fixture type.

Sconces at switch height. Forty-eight inches is a switch, not a sconce.

Measuring stair sconces from the floor. Each sconce is measured from the tread below it, so the row climbs with the stair.

Missing the second switch. Six or more risers, two switches. This is inspected.

Arms in corridors. A curved-arm sconce that projects 7 inches into a hallway fails the 4-inch rule and catches shoulders.
