How to Clean Unlacquered Brass

Caring for Unlacquered Brass — A Practical Guide

Unlacquered brass is a living finish. It darkens with air, moisture, and touch, and that is the reason to specify it. But "living finish" raises a practical question that the aesthetic case never quite answers: what do you actually do with it? This guide covers routine cleaning, how to bring the shine back if a client wants it, how to slow the patina if they want it kept somewhere in the middle, and the handful of products that will damage the metal.

What Is Happening to the Surface

Raw brass reacts with oxygen and forms a thin oxide layer that shifts the color from bright gold toward a warmer, deeper brown-gold. Fingerprints and moisture accelerate it, which is why a sconce darkens first around the switch or the shade edge where hands touch it. The patina is not dirt and it is not damage. It is the surface of the metal, and it protects what is underneath. Everything below is about how much of that process to allow.

Routine Cleaning

For fixtures that are simply dusty, a dry, soft cloth — microfiber or cotton — is all that is needed. For fingerprints or a film of kitchen grease, use a cloth dampened with warm water and a small amount of mild dish soap, wipe, then wipe again with a clean damp cloth and dry immediately. Water left to dry on brass leaves spots that become permanent marks in the patina.

That is the whole routine. Most unlacquered brass fixtures in a residence need nothing more than a dry cloth every few months. Turn the fixture off and let it cool before cleaning; never spray anything directly at a fixture with a socket or an LED driver.

Restoring the Shine

If a client wants the fixture returned to bright gold, the patina can be removed. A commercial brass polish — the paste type, applied with a soft cloth and buffed off — is the most controllable method. Work in small sections and stop when the color is where you want it; polish removes a thin layer of metal every time, so it is not something to do monthly.

The household method works too: half a lemon dipped in salt, or a paste of equal parts flour, salt, and white vinegar, rubbed on and rinsed off. It is faster and less even than paste polish. Rinse thoroughly, because any acid left on the surface will re-patina the metal in blotches within days.

Polishing is a reset, not a preservation. The moment the polish comes off, the brass begins to darken again, and it will do so unevenly for the first few weeks. Tell clients this before they ask for it.

Slowing the Patina

For clients who like the fixture at a particular point — bright but not mirror-bright, warm but not dark — a coat of wax holds the surface there for a while. A microcrystalline conservator's wax or a plain carnauba paste wax, applied thinly with a cloth, buffed, and reapplied every few months, slows oxidation without sealing the metal the way lacquer does. When the wax wears away the brass resumes aging, and the wax can be removed at any time with mineral spirits.

Wax is the honest middle ground. It is reversible, it does not fail the way lacquer does, and it does not change the color of the brass.

What Not to Use

Ammonia, bleach, and anything marketed as an all-purpose or glass cleaner. Ammonia attacks brass and leaves a dull, pitted surface that does not recover.

Abrasive pads, steel wool, and scouring powders. These scratch the surface and the scratches take patina differently from the surrounding metal.

Silver polish, chrome polish, and jewelry cleaners. Wrong formulation for brass; they can strip the surface unevenly.

Lacquer, clear coat, or spray sealers applied in the field. Lacquer over an aged surface traps the patina, fails at the edges, and cannot be removed without stripping the fixture.

Setting Expectations with Clients

The most useful thing a designer can do with unlacquered brass is describe the timeline before installation. In a dry living room the fixture will shift noticeably over the first three to six months and then slow down. In a bathroom or kitchen the change is faster and less even. Anywhere it is touched daily — a switch, a swing arm — darkens first. None of this is a defect and none of it needs to be corrected.

Aged brass, which is chemically darkened at the workshop, arrives at the developed tone from day one and continues to evolve slowly; it is the better choice for clients who want the look without the first-year transition. Both finishes are cared for exactly as described above.

Common Mistakes

Polishing on a schedule. Polish only on request, and explain that it restarts the clock.

Cleaning with glass cleaner. Almost all of them contain ammonia.

Leaving water to dry. Spots become permanent. Dry the fixture.

Mixing finishes on one wall. Two unlacquered fixtures installed six months apart will not match for a year. Install pairs together.
